Persons who wish to come to the Netherlands to follow a study at an institution of secondary or vocational education or a University can be given residence for a maximum of five years.

Very important is that the student or sponsor shows that the student has enough means at his or her disposal to finance the study and to support his or herself. The student must show that he of she has an amount of € 754,41 (including funds for the tuition fee) or € 626,24 (excluding tuition fee) at his or her disposal.

Further requirements are, proof of health insurance, (provisional) proof of registration at a University, or an institute of secondary or vocational education.

Students are also allowed residence for a preparatory year. This is a year during which the student prepares to be accepted in a University, or an institute of secondary or vocational education.
