Free access to the labor market for Croations per July 1st

Because the Netherlands made use of the possibility to postpone the free movement of employees for Croatia. (According to the Dutch government this was necessary because of the economic situation at that time in.) As a result, for a long time Croatians could only work in the Netherlands if the employer was in possession of a valid work permit (TWV). In 2015, this so-called transitional regime was extended for another three years until 1 July 2018.

As the current economic situation has improved considerably, the Dutch government sees no reason to extend this transitional period again. That is why Croatians, like all other EU and EEA citizens, can work freely and without a work permit in the Netherlands from 1 July 2018.

Croatians can also no longer apply for review of EU law (proof of lawful residence). A valid Croatian passport or ID card is sufficient proof that a Croatian is legally residing in the Netherlands and is allowed to work freely.
